Stargazing with the AAA at The Evergreens Cemetery

We are happy to announce that this year’s annual Spring Starfest will be held at The Evergreens Cemetery in Brooklyn. I’m not sure how our tradition of holding stargazing sessions in local cemeteries actually started, but if you think about it, it’s good place to get out from under direct city lights.

In past years we have held Spring Starfest at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx. Due to some changes in management, we decided to seek out another location.  Since our club has been observing at The Evergreens for several years now, our contacts there were only too happy to host our event in this May.

I asked Eva Bowerman, Director of Programs, what she would like us to know about this historic location:

Our serene grounds provide a respite from the chaos of the urban environment. This a historic cemetery in the ‘rural’ style, and was incorporated in 1849. It covers 225 acres. Over 526,000 people are buried here, including notables such as tap legend Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, jazz musician Lester Young, and painter Martin Heade. The landscape was designed by noted landscape architect Andrew Jackson Downing. The Victorian Gothic Chapel was designed by Alexander Jackson Davis in 1849/50. The Evergreens Cemetery is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Visitors from the community are welcomed to this green space through a wide variety of programs. They include historical tours, tours of cemetery art and architecture, tree walks, bird walks, stargazing, yoga, holiday events for families, and other events.

Join us on May 19th for Spring Starfest at The Evergreens Cemetery, located at 1629 Bushwick Ave, Brooklyn. More information will be posted to our website at: www.aaa.org.
