Finding Exoplanets (2025)

A review of various methods for finding planets around stars plus detecting an exoplanet in images from AAA’s Gateway remote telescopes in Texas and Chile.

From our instructor: “Embark on a two-night journey into the realm of exoplanets, where we’ll unravel the mysteries of worlds beyond our solar system. Once rarity, exoplanets are now known to be abundant throughout the cosmos, transforming our understanding of planetary systems and the potential for life elsewhere.

“In our first session we’ll trace the evolution of exoplanet research to the cutting-edge discoveries of today. We’ll explore the ingenious detection methods astronomers employ, from the subtle wobble of stars to the fleeting shadows of transiting planets, and the groundbreaking missions that revolutionized our.

“In our second session we’ll enter the excitement of real-time exploration. We go from theory to practice, using the power of our remote telescopes. How we plan observations, process images, and extract information.  If weather permits we’ll conduct an observation session, using our remote telescope in Chile.

“Explore the diversity of exoplanets, from scorching “hot Jupiters” to potentially habitable Earth-like worlds. Discuss the search for extraterrestrial life and the profound questions they raise. It’s for seasoned stargazers or a curious newcomers. This is citizen science. Participate in the quest to understand these distant worlds, and bridge the gap between the professional astronomer and the passionate amateur.”
