James Webb Telescope Update: 2 Years of Images (2024)

Wednesday – October 30 – 7-9 PM online

The Webb Telescope was launched Christmas Day 2021 and now is nearly 1 million miles away in a stable spot that follows the Earth. Its cameras can photograph all of space opposite the direction to the sun.  It observes solar system objects, Milky Way Galaxy objects and other galaxies, and the entire universe. Its  cameras are attuned to infrared light unlike the Hubble Telescope that primarily observes in visible light. This has added new understandings of astronomical objects and events. These understandings include unique discoveries about planets and moons; confirmation and characteristics of exoplanets around other stars; cosmological data related to the expansion, evolution, and forces in the cosmos. These will be reviewed with relevant images from the Webb.

Instructor: Walt Windish. Active member of the North Jersey Astronomical Group (Montclair) and the Rockland Astronomy Club. He is a frequent speaker for the United Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey public nights talks given at Jenny Jump Observatory. [AAA is a supporting member of the UACNJ.]
Now retired from the U.S. Treasury Walt can spend late nights observing the sky.
