Stellarium Demo (2025)

Thursdays, March 27, April 3, April 10
7-9 PM ET, online

Members $36, nonmembers $50.

Stellarium is a widely used program that simulates astronomical movements and events as seen from any location on Earth or space … at any time past or future. Astronomy presentations, professors, and college labs often make use of this app. Many AAA members are familiar with it too. Some consult it in planning talks, articles, observing sessions, and for private enjoyment. Best of all it’s free. Download the latest version (24.4  now 25.1) and its “User Guide” (separate download) before class at http://stellarium.org

Previously, the AAA gave extended Stellarium workshops. In this shorter “Demo” course we give a show and tell of its capabilities and a brief introduction to its features and controls. Our goal is to orient members to begin their independent study of the program. The app itself contains instructions for its use.

March 27: The Big Bang and Stellarium
Its user interface, bells and whistles, settings, and overview. This will cover the main topics so you can start using Stellarium.

April 3: A Cosmic Journey with Stellarium
Ever wanted to visit Mars undercover as a double agent and bring down the Mars colonizers? Now you can! (A line freely adapted from Total Recall). We can use Stellarium to explore our solar system, galaxy, and the Universe. A profound tool that can bring science a little bit closer.
April 10: O and O (Observing and Operations) with Stellarium
Using Stellarium you are able to finely tune your observing session. The example of Sirius B will demonstrate how to enter the specs for your observing rig and come to observe a difficult object. Stellarium Mobile is an excellent on-the-go interface that allows you to control any telescope reliably—even older dinosaurs. I will demonstrate this with the AutoFiLX200 – WiFi adapter and the Meade 200LX.

Instructor- Matthias Schmitt has a master’s in astronomy and conducts observation sessions for the U.S. Park Service at Cedar Breaks, Utah. He also operates a private night-sky touring service. He previously directed TV/cable programs on space science and adventures for young people. Matthias is an active AAA member, Eyepiece contributor, frequent instructor, and was featured in a “AAA Sky” podcast. He travels often to view solar eclipses.
