Tour of the Fall Sky (2024)

A free online talk, 7-9 PM, Thursday, September 19

Celebrate the Fall Equinox with us. It occurs at 8:43 AM EDT on Sunday, Sept. 22.
This is when the axis of the Earth points neither towards nor away from the sun resulting in exactly 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night everywhere on Earth.

This survey will introduce the constellations seen in the northeast of the U.S. by eye or binoculars roughly between 8 PM and 1 AM. We’ll review their outlines, allegorical  representations, myths, history, key stars, and some unique deep sky objects located within them. The Fall sky contains about 10-12 of the 44 Northern constellations. This orientation will help as you observe night skies to about 1 AM this Fall.

Our instructor is Lydia Maria Petrosino, AAA resource on astronomy history and sky myths, and former presenter at NYC’s Hayden Planetarium.
