Binary Stars (2023)

September 20, 2023 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM EDT

A FREE CLASS FOR AAA MEMBERS AND NON-MEMBERS

Binary Stars (2023)

Wednesday, September 20, 7-9 PM via Zoom

A large proportion of stars are binary – two stars that revolve around a common center of gravity between them. We’ll review their characteristics and physics, how they may be observed, key parameters to measure and calculate about them, and the significance of such research in astronomy today.

Binary stars are one type of star investigated by astronomers. Other types include variable stars which are the focus of three fee-based classes starting October 18 by leaders of AAVSO, the American Association of Variable Star Observers. So this talk, which is free, initiates a four-part series on special stars.

Our instructor is Bart Fried, Executive V.P. of the AAA and the Founder of the Antique Telescope Society. Bart has given AAA classes on the history and design of telescopes. He is now engaged in establishing a coming AAA public observatory in the Bronx.
