Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2024
7–8:30 PM online
[IN PREPARATION FOR THE AAA LECTURE, TUESDAY, FEB. 13]
Gaia is a satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA). Since 2013 it has become the gold standard for astronomy measurements and revealed amazing insights into our galaxy. It has taken data on about 2 billion stars in our sector of the Milky Way Galaxy, extending 32,000 lightyears to the galactic center.
On Tuesday, February 13, Dr. Rocio Kiman, of Cal Tech, will present the free monthly AAA lecture on breakthroughs from Gaia’s recent data releases and on her own research on dwarf stars using Gaia data.
This pre-lecture class will help to better understand that lecture by reviewing the history and workings of the Gaia satellite. We’ll review its key features like its instruments, parallax, photometry, spectra. We’ll also view images and videos derived from Gaia data. Review presented by David Kiefer, Chair of AAA Classes Committee.
