Celebrate the summer solstice with a free class.
Constellations of the Zodiac
Thursday, June 20, 7-9 PM, online, free.
Zodiac constellations
Zodiac symbols or signs
This class focuses on the history and stories of the Zodiac constellations, which are 12 of the 88 official constellations. They’re special because the sun is positioned in front of only these 12 constellations over a year. They were vital to the ancient beliefs of astrology, to mythology, and have a rich history in modern astronomy.
At 4:50 PM EDT today – June 20, 2024 – the north tip of Earth’s axis reaches maximum inclination towards the sun. It’s the summer solstice. It’s the longest day and shortest night in the Northern Hemisphere. The sun reaches its highest point in our sky. It’s the start of astronomical summer and great beach weather.
Our instructor is Lydia Maria Petrosino, AAA resource on astronomy history and sky myths, and former presenter at NYC’s Hayden Planetarium.
