An introduction to astronomy and the Solar System. Hierarchy and motions of objects in space. Distance measurements. Thumbnail sketch of history and physics of astronomy. Details of the Solar System: sun, moon, planets, asteroids, meteors, comets. Seasons and tides on Earth. Recommended for new AAA members and interested friends/family, and as a review for continuing members who want to take our more specialized classes also. Stellarium computer simulations will be used to illustrate selected topics.

Don’t put your camera away when the sun sets! Learn how to shoot the night sky with landscapes with a digital SLR or mirrorless camera and ordinary lenses (not through telescopes). How to shoot well composed and exposed starscapes, night sky landscapes, eclipses, the moon, astronomical phenomena. This will be an in-depth course about wide field night sky photography.

Astronomy 102 explores the universe beyond the Solar System. We discuss how and when the universe began, the formation of stars and galaxies, its expansion, and probable future.  We study how astronomers measure great distances and how stars generate their tremendous energies.  We will explore how elements are produced in stars, the structure and types of galaxies, and exotic objects like neutron stars and black holes.
